Kalape launches Mopani disability literacy programme

Kalape Youth Empowerment launches programme at Letaba Special School, promoting inclusive storytelling and empowering learners with disabilities.

LIMPOPO – Kalape Youth Empowerment launched a disability literacy programme at Letaba Special School recently.

The event was attended by learners from Letaba Special School, Yingisani School for the Deaf and other mainstream schools.

Kalabe Youth Empowerment project manager, Victor Phiri, said the event aimed to create a platform for learners with disabilities to tell their stories in their special way and see that they are not different from others.

“Learners shared their stories through poetry, drawings, drama and dancing. We also want the ‘normal’ kids to know that people with disabilities are able, they just do things differently. We also gave them tips on how to improve their storytelling,” he said.

Kalape is an organisation which empowers young people through literacy across the Mopani District Municipality.

Photo added that they are working with libraries and sign language organisations to include audio and braille books.
