Namakgale woman killed in freightliner crash
A 48-year-old woman was fatally hit by a freightliner in Phalaborwa, prompting investigations and renewed calls for road safety.
PHALABORWA – Yet another tragedy struck Namakgale on Friday, November 7, when a 48-year-old woman was fatally knocked down by a freightliner transporting pillars. The incident occurred at around 12:20 on Calvin Ngobeni Drive, at a T-junction next to the Namakgale Crossing.
According to reports, the woman was on her way to a funeral in Ga-Selwane. Eyewitnesses said she was standing on the pavement near the T-junction, waiting for her daughter, who was still at the shopping complex.
Eyewitnesses describe horrifying scene
The truck, approaching from the direction of the Namakgale entrance, allegedly attempted to avoid an overtaking Avanza carrying passengers when it struck the pedestrian.
“We were shouting to alert the driver that he had hit someone. He stopped, checked the scene, and instructed us to call the police. He then reversed the truck to remove it from the woman’s body,” one eyewitness said.
The truck allegedly struck the pedestrian from behind with its left front wheel while the remaining four wheels ran over her, causing fatal injuries.
“It was extremely traumatic to witness the incident. The woman suffered a painful death. Seeing the truck strike her like that was horrifying,” said another eyewitness.
Another added that she would need months to recover from the trauma, saying it would affect her ability to sleep.

Police and Transport Department launch investigation
Emergency services responded promptly, and the woman was declared dead at the scene.
The Department of Transport has confirmed that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the event. Constable Khomotso Hlokwe of Mopani District SAPS also stated that no arrests have been made, as the matter remains under investigation.
Tidimalo Chuene, spokesperson for the Transport Department, expressed condolences.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a pedestrian on our roads. Our heartfelt sympathies go to her family, friends, and loved ones. May her soul rest in peace. In light of this tragic incident, we urge all road users to prioritise safety. Drivers must remain vigilant, reduce speed, and exercise caution around pedestrians.
