Man to appear in court for attempted rape of niece (14) in Letsitele

A 43-year-old man was arrested for the attempted rape of his 14-year-old niece in Letsitele and will appear in court on Monday.

TZANEEN – A 43-year-old man is due to appear in court on Monday (January 12) for the attempted rape of his 14-year-old niece in Sedan village, Letsitele.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the incident occurred on Thursday (January 8) when the suspect entered the room where the victim was. The girl fought back and managed to escape before immediately reporting the incident to her father.

A case was opened at the Letsitele Police Station and transferred to the Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for investigation, leading to the swift arrest of the suspect.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers commended the victim’s courage and the investigating officers’ prompt response.

“I want to commend the victim for her bravery in coming forward… and I encourage all victims of sexual offences to break the silence and report these crimes to police,” he stated.
