Former addict opens recovery centre in Nkowankowa

Former drug addict Lester Nhlangwini has opened the Everyday Recovery Centre in Nkowankowa to help others overcome addiction.

TZANEEN – Former drug addict Lester Nhlangwini is turning his personal journey into a lifeline for others after opening the Everyday Recovery Centre in Nkowankowa. The centre assists people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction to reclaim their lives.

A father of two, Nhlangwini overcame a 24-year addiction and has since dedicated himself to helping others avoid a similar path.

Earlier this month, he officially launched the centre, which focuses on detoxing and counselling. The programme draws on principles from Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, while also incorporating Christian faith-based values.

The centre is, however, open to people of all faiths.

Nhlangwini works alongside Nomvula Mushwana, a professional nurse who leads the detox process, while he provides counselling to patients. He believes a strong support system is essential for recovery.

“I would not have been free from drugs without my family’s support,” he said. “Recovery is a difficult journey, and families need to be there every step of the way. Without support, it becomes almost impossible to overcome addiction.”

He also cautioned that rehabilitation is not a quick fix and requires commitment from the patient.

Mushwana described drug addiction as a growing pandemic, driven by the easy availability of drugs. She urged parents to remain vigilant.

“Constant lying, stealing, and aggressive behaviour can be warning signs,” she said. “Parents should pay attention to changes in behaviour and be aware of what their children may be hiding.”

Patients at the centre stay for six months and are allowed visitors only after six weeks.
