Magoebas Ultra Trail draws athletes from across SA

The fifth edition of the Magoebas Ultra Trail saw athletes from across the country navigate technical trails and steep climbs.

TZANEEN – Runners were pushed to their limits at the fifth edition of the Magoebas Ultra Trail on Saturday, March 21, as early wet conditions gave way to a clear and striking day on the trails of Magoebaskloof.

The event, known for its demanding terrain, once again drew athletes from across the country, all seeking to test their endurance across distances ranging from 10km to 100km.

In the 30km feature race, Charlie Foot delivered a dominant performance to win the men’s race in an impressive 03:28:29. Maryke van Zyl matched that excellence in the women’s division, claiming victory in 03:46:27 after a strong and consistent run.

Across the longer distances, the competition remained fierce. Johann Olivier led the field in the gruelling 100km race, finishing in 12:38:22. Local favourite Leon Roode came in fourth with a time of 13:41:45, while Carin Scholtz topped the women’s category in 16:56:14.

The 60km and 45km races also saw standout performances, with athletes navigating technical trails, steep climbs, and unpredictable conditions.

Despite the challenging start, the atmosphere throughout the day reflected the spirit of the event, a combination of perseverance, community and appreciation for the outdoors.
