Ramathuba 1st female ANC chairperson for Limpopo
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has been elected unopposed as ANC provincial chairperson, marking another historic first for the province.
LIMPOPO – Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has made history again – this time after being elected as the first female provincial chairperson of the ANC in Limpopo, two years after becoming the province’s first female premier.
Unity slate secures top five leadership positions
She was elected unopposed on Saturday, during the party’s 11th elective conference, held at the Pietersburg Cricket Club in Polokwane.
Polokwane City Mayor John Mpe was elected deputy provincial chairperson, while Reuben Madadzhe retained his position as provincial secretary. Pule Shayi was elected deputy provincial secretary and Eddy Maila as provincial treasurer.
All top five officials were elected unopposed, reflecting what party leaders described as a unified front.
Ramaphosa praises unity ahead of 2026 elections
ANC president and President Cyril Ramaphosa praised Limpopo as an example of unity within the party, noting the significance of the uncontested leadership slate.
A unity slate had reportedly emerged ahead of the conference, with branch-nominated candidates facing no opposition. Ramathuba succeeds outgoing provincial chairperson Stanley Mathabatha.
New leadership pledges stronger governance
Addressing delegates, Ramathuba expressed confidence in the province’s ability to strengthen governance.
“Those who think we are going to struggle with local government must know Limpopo will show South Africa that we are capable,” she said.
Her election followed a ruling by the High Court of South Africa, which dismissed an urgent application to interdict the conference over nomination concerns. The court found the matter was not urgent and could be heard at a later stage.
Closing the conference on Sunday, Ramaphosa described it as “well-organised and event-free,” again emphasising unity.
He urged the new leadership to boost the party’s performance ahead of the 2026 local government elections, noting Limpopo’s importance as an ANC stronghold.
