PLASIE staff members played the traditional Pro22 cricket match against Westfalia’s team on Merensky’s B cricket field on Friday. The format of the game was 22 overs, giving each team member a chance to bowl 2 overs and if a batsmen scored 20 runs he needed to retire to give every player on his team a chance to bat. If everyone was out, he could come back and continue his innings.
Westfalia batted first and was bowled out in the last over for 127 runs. Gerhardus was one of the players who scored 20 not out and returned in the later overs to give his team a chance to post a good total.
Merensky then had an opportunity to show their mettle. They betterd Westfalia’s score in the 15th over and won the match. Merensky also had a few players who scored 20 not out (Maurits, Wessel, Hein, Danie, Magnus snr.) After Merensky won in the 15th over, the friendly guys from Westfalia decided to let Merensky bat their full 22 overs in the spirit of the game.
Everyone played their hearts out and some players narrowly escaped with a few scrapes and bruises.
At the end of the day there was not an official man of the match but the Merensky players named Antonie Botha for his dedication in the field, his gutsy innings with the bat and his “never say die” attitude.
Once again this yearly match was played in good spirit, decreasing year-end stress levels with loads of fun.
