Maruleng’s Mayor’s Cup held over weekend
Maruleng Local Municipality hosted its very first Mayor's Cup after the Covid-19 lockdown came to an end over the Easter weekend.
Fourteen male and 14 female football teams and 14 pool teams participated from across all the wards of the local municipality. The last day of the tournament was graced with the attendance of soccer star Simphiwe Tshabalala and Kgoloko Thobejane who is the head coach of Baroka FC.
Maruleng Municipality mayor, Tsheko Musolwa officially opened the tournament presented in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. The tournament was held at the showgrounds next to Mahlakung Mall. “It is good to be back after the national lockdown. The event was a great success and community members came out in numbers to support their ward teams.

“We had ladies’ soccer, men’s soccer, netball and pool. “Bakhalva Club from ward 14 were the netball champions and United Boys from ward 13 were the soccer champions. In pool Tsibane Pool Club from ward 9 became the champions and in ladies’ soccer Hlohlokwe Ladies Club from ward 11 became champions,” said Sody Magomane, acting spokesperson of the Maruleng Local Municipality.
The mayor thanked all participants and spectators who took part over the two days. He handed the winning teams their trophies and medals.
