Mile smiles in choppy water

It was the perfect day for open water swimming at the Ebenezer Dam where the Haenertsburg Rotary Club presented the Ebenezer Mile last Saturday.

Pia Stewart took first place in the women’s division of the mile for the third consecutive year, winning the 31 and older category with a time of 23:57. “I didn’t swim at the same pace as last year, but the water was great,” said Pia. She also mentioned that the water was choppier on the way out than it was last year. Her daughter, Leah Stewart took first place in the 13 and younger category, completing the mile in 27:42.

Mari Rabie took second place and Sanel Honiball took third place in the 31 and older category while Leandri Terblanche took second place in the 13 and younger category. In the men’s mile, Illa Papadopoulus took first place in the 13 and younger category with Ulrich Engelbrecht in second place, they completed the mile in 27:31 and 28:29, respectively. Kuno Venter took first place in the 31 and older age group with a time of 25:00.

Leon Roode took second place and Pierre Bassani took third place. Ockert Maritz took first place overall in the 14 to 30 age group, swimming the mile in 23:30. Jason Kok and Armand Burger took second and third place, respectively. Jean Marie Swartz took first place in the women’s division with a time of 23:43. Shukrallah Honiball took second place and Carmé Louw took third place in the 14 to 30 age category.

Jenny Zhang took first place overall in the 3000m open water swim. She completed the race in 46:48. Marie Rabie took second place overall and in the women’s division with a time of 49:58. Dylan Kamstra won the men’s 300m open water swim with a time of 51:42 while Terry Papadopoulus took second place and Ewan Hickling took third place.
