Sithembiso Miya: From adversity to the captain’s armband

From humble beginnings to leading Winners Park, Sithembiso Miya’s journey is one of perseverance, loyalty, and leadership.

LIMPOPO – Sithembiso George Miya, a talented and determined goalkeeper, has a story that inspires many in football circles.

Born and raised in Zola, a township in Soweto, Miya’s journey in football is a testament to resilience, passion, and unwavering support from his family.

Known as King George among football lovers, Miya’s early life was marked by hardship. At the age of 10, he lost both his parents and was raised by his sister Francinah and aunt Sophie Miya.

Despite these challenges, Miya found solace and purpose in football.

His football journey began in 2004 when he joined the Esithebeni Primary School team in Soweto. At the time, the team lacked a goalkeeper, and Miya stepped up to fill the role. Little did he know, this decision would ignite his passion for goalkeeping and set him on a path to greatness.

His talent and love for the game began to shine through, setting the stage for a remarkable career. It did not take long before he was scouted by Moroka Swallows’ development coaches, who invited him to join their development team. This marked the beginning of his career as a professional goalkeeper.

At the age of 21, Miya took a significant step in his football journey by travelling to Mopani for trials with Bellevue Winners Park during the 2016/17 season. His skills and dedication earned him a spot on the team.

However, his first stint with Winners Park ended on a bittersweet note. Although the team won the league on the field, they later lost it in the boardroom due to administrative issues.

This was a heartbreaking outcome that Miya found difficult to accept. When Winners Park owner Robert Mokgola decided to sell the team during the pre-season, Miya moved on to join Dube Continental in the ABC Motsepe League in Gauteng. He continued to hone his skills and contribute to the team, but his connection to Winners Park remained strong.

In a twist of fate, Mokgola repurchased the Winners Park team and recalled Miya at the age of 28 to rejoin the team. Miya returned to the club, only to see another transition as Mokgola sold the team again, this time to Dakkalo Ramuthaga from Vhembe.

Under the new ownership, Miya found a renewed sense of purpose and belonging; hence, he decided to stay with Winners Park this time, citing the warm welcome and professional management structure introduced by Ramuthaga when he took over ownership of the club.

“I have confidence that under the new chairman’s leadership, the team will achieve promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship within two seasons,” Miya said.

His belief in the team’s vision and his commitment to its success were further solidified when he was entrusted with the responsibility of being the team’s captain, a role he embraced with humility and pride.

Reflecting on his journey, Miya expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has been given, particularly by Ramuthaga, who has shown faith in him despite the team not currently doing well in the league.

As captain, Miya is determined to lead by example, both on and off the field, and to help Winners Park reach new heights.

Miya’s story is one of perseverance, loyalty, and leadership.

From the streets of Zola to captaining Winners Park, his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring footballers and a reminder that with hard work, belief, and the right opportunities, dreams can indeed become reality. “I give credit to God for the success of my journey,” he said.
