Young Phalaborwa karate champs strike gold at championship
Karatekas from Namakgale won gold at the Matlosana Cup, making their hometown proud with standout performances.
LIMPOPO – Two young karatekas from Shin Kyokushinkai Karate Namakgale have made their hometown proud after claiming top honours at the 13th annual Matlosana Cup Karate Knockout Tournament in Klerksdorp on April 5 and 6.
Amani Floris Dihangoane (20) and Mokhobi Austin Moagi (16) stood out among the tough competition, earning first-place victories in their respective categories. Dihangoane triumphed in the men’s under 55kg division, while Moagi triumphed in the boys’ under 50kg category, both showing skill, determination and focus.
Dihangoane said that the road to victory was anything but easy. Despite sustaining a foot injury during earlier rounds, he powered through the finals with grit and determination.
“Winning first place at the national knockout tournament feels so enthralling, knowing that I am the dominator,” he said.
His resilience impressed spectators, especially as he continued to use his injured leg to deliver sharp, clean kicks that led him to victory.
16-year-old Moagi showcased the experience and composure of a seasoned fighter. Having already won the tournament four times in the past, he entered the ring with confidence, though not without setbacks.
“In my first fight, I injured my leg but had to act like nothing happened. In my fourth fight, I faced a fighter I thought I would never defeat, but I won. Thanks to the encouragement of my teammates. I am happy, motivated, and proud,” Moagi explained.
The Matlosana Cup is one of South Africa’s premier full-contact karate events, drawing fighters from across the country and neighbouring countries, with categories spanning all ages and weights.
Both fighters train at the Namakgale Hall under the guidance of sensei Sydeck Monyela, whose dedication to discipline and skill development continues to shape champions. They train from Monday to Thursday.
