Vossies and Plasies share cricket derby glory
Merensky and Ben Vorster shared honours in their cricket derby, with Merensky’s first team winning and Ben Vorster’s u/15s taking victory.
TZANEEN – The cricket derby last weekend between long-standing rivals Merensky Agriculture Academy and Ben Vorster High School was nothing short of exhilarating, with each school claiming bragging rights in one of the two tightly contested matches.
The u/15A match took place at Ben Vorster’s home grounds, while the first teams faced off at Merensky. The senior team match saw Merensky dominate, securing a decisive nine-wicket victory over the visiting Vossies.
Bowling first, Merensky restricted Ben Vorster to just 81 all out in 24.2 overs. In response, Merensky comfortably chased down the target, finishing with 81/1 in 21.5 overs. Top scorers were Xander Schoeman with 32 runs and Logan Janse van Rensburg with 29.
However, it was the bowlers who sealed the win, with captain Luka Heinlein leading from the front by taking three wickets. Rinaldo Borman claimed four, while Timothy Baker added two more to the tally.

Merensky coach Steven Steyn praised his team’s focused performance.
“We were switched on from the start. Our goal wasn’t to worry about our opponents but to control what we could. Luka set the tone with his accuracy, and both Rinaldo and Timothy backed it up. Having such a strong bowling unit gave us control throughout,” he said.
Although the team initially intended to bat first, Steyn said he was pleased with how the game unfolded.
Meanwhile, Ben Vorster’s u/15A team, known as the Red Caps, shone in their home fixture. They posted 211 all out in 41 overs, thanks to standout performances by Willem Mostert, who took four wickets, and Altus Vorster with three. Merensky’s u/15 side fell short, managing only 177 runs in 36.2 overs.
Yogi Brahmbhatt led the batting for Merensky with an impressive 91 runs, supported by Jandré Venter (22) and Ethan Swiglaar (15). Despite the loss, the visitors showed resilience, but the Red Caps’ disciplined bowling attack kept the pressure on throughout.

Ben Vorster’s head of cricket, Rynier de Jager, hailed the derby as another memorable clash.
“The Red Caps are enjoying a fantastic season, and once again, all 11 players contributed to a well-deserved win over our neighbours, for the second consecutive year. Merensky fought bravely, but our determined spirit led us to our fifth league victory,” he said.
De Jager acknowledged the defeat of their first team, the Black Caps, but remained optimistic. “It was a tough loss, but all is not lost. The team must win their final two matches to stay in contention for the u/19 finals.”
Looking ahead, both Merensky teams will face Mohosi Hub (formerly Bochum) on Saturday, September 20.
The first team will play at home, while the u/15 side will compete at the Tzaneen Primary School field. Ben Vorster’s first team will host Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS), while the Red Caps will travel to face them away.
