Two on a mission to make Phalaborwa fit again

Two local fitness enthusiasts are on a mission to make Phalaborwa residents active again.

Tumi Masete and Thapelo (Tips) Motimele believe that the power of collaboration is stronger than competition, hence they combined their businesses into one enterprise.

Motimele’s love of being fit started at a young age. He used to lift weights with his peers in his friend’s garage.

He later acquired a personal training qualification at Fit Pro Institute, despite starting out studying civil engineering at Sir Val Duncan.

He also does modelling, advertising for clothing brands and works as a bouncer.

Masete’s passion also began at a young age.

He played sports but started taking fitness seriously when he was told that he had to take high blood pressure medication or shed off weight.

He studied boilermaking at Sedibeng College but went on to attain qualifications as an aerobics instructor, hiking facilitator and hockey umpiring.

“We worked as personal trainers on our own, but decided to merge our businesses as we are both passionate about the same thing.

“We believe that we can do a lot more by collaborating than competing against each other,” explained Masete.

On Wednesdays, they offer free aerobics classes to anyone interested at the Foskor Grounds.

Masete also hosts hikes for people who would like to explore nature and keep fit.

“Our hikes are not limited to people from Phalaborwa only, we are blessed with people from all walks of life that join us.

“Currently, I do the hikes on my own, but I’ll be bringing Tips along to work with me.”

The pair told the Herald that their hope for their community is to be fit and experience good health.

“We would like for our community to participate in our boot camps or fitness camps so they can see the importance of exercising.

“Even if they join other boot camps, they should at least exercise as South Africa is on the list of top 10 countries of people living with obesity,” they concluded.
