Check your car

The past weekend has seen a surge in remote thefts with a suspected nine cases reported.

Captain Khanyisile Zwane, police spokesperson, confirmed that thieves are once again resorting to remote controls to gain access to the vehicles of unsuspecting residents.

Several cases were reported at the Wonderpark Centre parking area. Incidents were also reported at Shoprite and Shell Ultra City. In most cases people have their phones or electronic devices such as a GPS stolen.

“People need to physically check their doors when they get out,” Capt. Zwane said.

Marie Coetzee said that she stopped in John Magagula Street to buy a battery.

“I usually check my car but on that day I was in a hurry, and the car was parked right in front of the shop so I quickly ran in.”

The shopowner next door came to call them. He said that the two suspects were in his shop when Mrs Coetzee parked.

By the time he realized what was happening they had already opened her car and made off with her valuables.

“Stay vigilant. Check your doors, even if you are in a hurry,” she said.
