Update: Taxi war continues (Part 2)

One person was shot and killed in Extention 24 on Friday evening where a strike over taxi permits has escalated into a territorial war between the Nasaret Taxi Association and the Mhluzi District Taxi Association.

The body of the deceased still needs to be identified. He was allegedly shot in his stomach by a police official during another violent protest.

The situation reached boiling point by the awarding of transport licenses to the Mhluzi Taxi Association, while the Nasaret Taxi Association was ignored.

Nasaret operators refused to hand over the income they generate from within their own community.

On Tuesday three houses were burned down, tires were set alight and the school were closed for the children’s safety.

Three people have been arrested for public violence after a house was damaged and a bus was set alight.

A meeting was scheduled between police, both rival taxi associations and the mayor Mr Mike Masina.

When only Nasaret pitched up, they reacted with anger and started pelting passing cars with stones and empty beer bottles.
