National News – Newborn found in pit-toilet

A newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a sewer-pit early this morning in Matlala in Limpopo.

Lt.Col. Ronel Otto, Limpopo Police spokesperson, said that members of the police’s Search and Rescue unit were called to the scene after members of the community heard a baby crying from the bottom of a pit toilet.

The baby girl was eventually saved by Sgt Levi Mabethlela. She was treated on the scene and taken to an undisclosed hospital for further medical treatment.

• Baby X was found abandoned next to the railway line in Middelburg in September 2014. She was wrapped in newspaper and had her umbilical cord still attached. Baby X’s mother was never traced.

She was put in a place of safety outside of Middelburg after residents flocked to the Middelburg Hospital to see her.

The Middelburg Observer reported in August that police are pushing to close the docket so that Baby X can be considered for adoption.
