Strict water restrictions

The Middelburg Dam is under renewed water restrictions enforced by the Department of Water Affairs who have limited the taking out of water to 30ML per day with effect from last month.

The restrictions apply to all urban, irrigation, mining and industrial usage of water from the Middelburg Dam.

The Acting Director-General of the Department of Water Affairs, Trevor Balzer, stated that the reasons behind the decision were based on reasonable grounds to believe that a water shortage exists in the Klein Olifants River upstream from the Middelburg Dam catchment due to insufficient rains.

Municipal manager Mandla Mnguni stated that no one was exempt from the limitations as many people do not understand the seriousness of the situation.

“Everyone must adhere to the restrictions. People must change their attitudes towards this crisis and realise the importance of saving water”.

He also said that there will be no penalty fines for those who do not abide by the restrictions.

“The municipality is not going to issue fines for now although we have been considering it for a while. If we have to resort to such measures to ensure that people save water then we will not hesitate. For now we hope that people adhere to the law and comply”.
