Protests over land erupt in Mhluzi

Hundreds of protesters in Mhluzi barricaded entrances to the township early on Tuesday morning, stoned cars and intimidated residents as a land claim issue in Extension 6 boils over.

It was reported that at least 200 protesters, furious with the municipality for preventing a land grab close to Avalon through court action, vented their anger and frustration by locking down Mhluzi and sealed off all entrances.

They also prevented people from leaving the area and hundreds of residents were unable to go to work this morning.

The municipality obtained an interim court order earlier this month to forcibly prevent a land grab in Extension 6 – a move that hasn’t gone down well with the residents. A final court decision is expected on 29 November.

Protesters burnt tyres and blocked roads.

By 08:00 on Tuesday morning most of the roads had been cleared and the situation in Mhluzi began to normalize.

Mhluzi SAPS spokesperson Nelisiwe Masemola said that groups were still gathered at various points and that police were monitoring the situation.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries sustained as a result of the protest action and no arrests.

The protesters are expected to march to the municipality later this morning.
