VIDEO: Johannes and his music box bike

An accident in 2005 caused a gardener, Johannes Shabangu (54), from Extension 24, to engineer what he calls a “safety bicycle”, to alert other drivers that he is on the road.

He was hit by a car on his old standard bicycle at the Columbus robots, and then he decided to build one for his own safety and those of school children.

The bicycle has distinct features that has everyone’s heads turning: Lights in the front and back, including brights, a cassette player in his safety box with all his personal belongings (sort of a boot), a hooter and then his kierie and sjambok for the tsotsis.

The bicycle uses battery power only, which is charged every week.

•Every morning before school he drives around HTS Middelburg and Laerskool C.R. Swart with the music blearing from his music box.

Even the most depressed starts smiling when he passes and when Johannes is around with his bicycle learners on their way to school could be assured he will look after their safety.

He will even stop speeding motorists.
