Update: Eyewitnesses wanted

Eyewitnesses who saw the fiasco where a police convoy came head to head with an ambulance carrying the critically injured Bernine Booysen after the horrific accident on the N4 on 3 September, are requested to come forward.

Brigadier Rudolph Adolph, who was appointed to spearhead the internal investigation against several police members in the convoy, needs more information to support either of the two opposing versions he currently has.

The police claim that they were rushing to the scene and that the black Lexus at the end of the convoy assisted them in keeping the lane from being blocked again.

Journalists who were on the scene claim that police officers ignored their pleas to wait until the ambulance had passed and that the Lexus simply joined the convoy in an attempt to get through still standing traffic as quick as possible.

Brigadier Adolph is appealing to members of the public, who might have witnessed the convoy, have videos or pictures thereof or who can assist with any additional information to shed light on the matter, to come forward.

Five people burned to death during the accident. The only survivor, Mrs Booysen, was rushed to hospital in a critical state after she was pulled from a wreck moments before it was engulfed by flames.

Oncoming traffic in all four lanes on the N4 prevented the ambulance from getting to the hospital. She succumbed to her wounds after arriving at the Middelburg Hospital.

Eyewitnesses can contact brig. Adolph at adolph7@saps.gov.za or contact the Middelburg Observer standby number on 072 248 3855.
