Warning Graphic Content – Acid attacker in custody
A cruel act of revenge by Euphemia Sethema (34), has blinded the girlfriend of her husband, and maimed her for life, following a brutal acid attack at Sethema's marital home in Aerorand.
bed. She has serious injuries to her
eyes, breast and left hand.
It is alleged that Sethema threw acid in the face of Linah Sesy Skhosana (27) early last month, in what seems to be a lovers triangle turned violent.
It is alleged that Sethema, who has two children with the man, visited his house in Aerorand on July 9, where she found Skhosana doing laundry.
“I told you I don’t want you here” Sethema allegedly told Linah, before attacking her with acid and following the fleeing “girlfriend” into the house.
Skhosana frantically called out to the man in the middle of the saga, who tried to intervene, but was also badly burnt by the acid on his hands.
After the attack, the man chased Sethema out of the house.
“My sister then appealed to him to leave her, and take her to the hospital because she couldn’t see,” Ms Kuliki Duduzile Skhosana, elder sister of the victim told the Middelburg Observer. The man rushed Skhosana to hospital in his vehicle.
“I rushed to the hospital after the boyfriend told us about the incident, I saw doctors all over her, I was crying asking myself whether or not she will survive,” added Kuliki.
The victim was in ICU for two weeks, but remains in a critical condition at the Middelburg Hospital. Skhosana sustained serious injuries to her eyes, breasts and left arm.
“My sister can’t walk, talk or see, we demand justice, she has a three year old son whom she has to take care of,” said Kuliki.
“Both my parents are devastated, my mom is an emotional wreck, and can’t accept that this has happened to her child,” said Kuliki.
Sethema, who is charged with attempted murder, appeared in court on July 21, and bail was again denied.
She reappeared in court on Thursday, 6 August, for the confirmation of her address, in another attempt for bail.
Family and friends marched outside the court on Monday, with placards pleading for bail to be opposed.
“We are scared that if she gets bail, she can easily go and kill my sister in hospital, she’s very unstable,” Kuliki said.
According to Kuliki, this was not the first attack. “In 2014 Euphemia went to Linah’s workplace where she repeatedly slapped her in the face. She also stole some of her clothes,” Kuliki said.
Linah could not apply for a protection order against Sethema, because she did not have an address or her full names.
Linah’s family was approached in court this week by a lady wanting to see whether Sethema, was the woman who similarly attacked her, when she was involved with the same man.
• In an exclusive interview with Sethema, she revealed a different side of the story. She told the Observer that she was still in a relationship with the man.
“He is an abusive man and a serial cheater who, has a number of children outside our marriage. The victim knew that I was his wife and she continued the affair even after I warned her,” Sethema claims.
“When I got there on Thursday, she was doing laundry and she started assaulting me, asking me what I was doing there. I got furious because that house in Aerorand was built for me and my two kids. I have been with this man for more than 12 years. I had no idea that the bottle I threw on her contained acid, it looked like traditional medicine. I just grabbed it and swung it to her face after she pulled my hair,” Sethema added.
I am not a monster but a woman who was trying to protect her family. I am however done with this man, he must leave me alone,” Sethema said.
