The teacher from Tshwenyane Combined school claims to have been unfairly dismissed by the schools Principal, Mr Leseba Mabusela, due to a personal vendetta.

Ms Mpafa was appointed on a temporary basis as a substitute for an ill teacher since last year and was loving her job. She was devastated when she was asked to pack up and go.

She claims to have renewed her contract more than four times and was told on the last day before the June holidays that she must not return. She did not get paid the end of July.

“I asked Mr Mabusela where my dismissal letter was and the reasons for my dismissal, he then said to me I am dismissed because I can’t teach in Sepedi and that I don’t have social science as a subject as per the departments requirements. I would understand if the teacher I was substituting was back at work but I know he is still ill,” said Ms Mpafu.

Ms Mpafu went to the schools SGB, circuit manager and the teachers union (SADTU) to seek advice and help. She was surprised to learn that they did not know of her dismissal at that time.

“As a woman I feel so destroyed during this woman’s month, I am sitting at home now jobless with nothing to support my two children and my adopted child,” added Ms Mpafa.

Jasper Zwane of the Department of Education released the following statement following a media inquiry:

“Please be in formed that the teacher in question was temporarily appointed on a substitute post as at the time there was a teacher who was on leave due to long illness.

“The contract of such post lapses upon the return of the actual incumbents. We advise that the teacher should apply for any vacant post in some of our schools.”
