Update: One body, many possible identities
Ms Zelda van Aswegen who, feared that the body found with a bag around the head at Avontuur three Sundays ago, was that of her brother, confirmed on Friday that it is not her brother, Anton van Loggerenberg's, corpse.
She visited the mortuary on Friday to assist police with a possible identification of the corpse.
“I’m very relieved that it is not my brother, but our worries remain endless since he still hasn’t made contact,” Ms Van Aswegen told the Observer.
Though the body was found in an advanced stage of decomposition, the facial features are still recognizable.
Police say that the body found with a single bullet wound to the head, was not that of a black or coloured man, but either the remains of a white or Indian male.
The Middelburg Observer reported on Ms van Aswegen’s anguish on its front page last week, alongside a picture of the clothes worn by the victim at the time of his murder.
Minutes after Ms Van Aswegen ruled out her brother, the Middelburg Observer received another call from a frantic mother who say the clothes looked familiar.
Ms Ansie Barnard of Pullenshope says her son Kallie (38), last had contact with the family over a year ago.
Kallie is a drug addict and lived on the streets of Middelburg for quite some time.
Kallie’s sister, Elma says, that during his stay in Middelburg they regularly offered him a roof over his head, which he always declined, but kept in contact.
According to Ansie, the last they heard of Kallie, was when a drifter friend of his told them he moved to Vryheid.
“It has been more than a year since we last heard of him and we’re worried that he may have been hurt, and those clothes look so familiar!” Ms Barnard anguishes.
Kallie has a tattoo on his inner left arm stating “Only God can judge me”.
Police say that no tattoos could be clearly identified on the body in the morgue due to the state of decomposition.
“We urge the Barnards to come file a missing persons report, and identify the remains,” captain Khanyisile Zwane said.
According to captain Zwane, three families have gone through the process of elimination, since the Observer started reporting on the body three weeks ago.
“None of the three families that came forward could make a positive identification,” captain Zwane confirmed.
The victim had jet black, sleek and straight hair.
