Video: Datsun couple ‘fumigated’ out of car

Drama fit for television, with petrol being thrown at traffic officers, threats of arson and murder by gunshot, all happening under a cloud of pepper spray, unfolded when the roaming Datsun dwellers, Rassie and Janetta Erasmus, were forcefully removed from their car on Friday.

The couple has been staying in the car for more than a year now. They travelled from park to park, forced to move continuously when confronted by nervous residents or law enforcement authorities. Strangely enough, no one could seem to come up with a solution about what to do with the couple, until now.

Friday was the last standoff. A move brought on by the couple’s unwise decision to park next to the Kees Taljaard Stadium entrance where the much anticipated Town of the Year celebration was hosted on Friday.

Rassie was pulled out of the car first but traffic officers and security guards were forced to back down when he poured petrol over his car as well as over them and threatened to set everything alight rather than leave his car behind.

With the Fire Department on the scene, a renewed onslaught was launched and the filthy couple was forced from their car with the help of pepper spray being sprayed into an opening in a window.

The couple alighted and moved to a concrete fence close by.

That was not the end of the drama however, as Janetta rushed to the car just before it was towed away, and alighted from it with what looked like a gun. The help of the police was called in. A journalist was able to convince the upset couple to hand over the gun before they arrived on the scene. It turned out to be a gas gun.

The Datsun was impounded because it is not road worthy. A piece of the back window as well as the boot has been modified to convert the sedan into a hatchback. A look into the car revealed the haggard circumstances under which the couple lived with bolts, nuts and tools occupying most of the space.
