Update: Jugomaro pity’s Mbidi cats
With the plight of the animals of Mbidi in the spotlight, people have also asked how things are going with the Jugomaro Predator Park animals which is still in the possession of the Fernandes family, despite having been evicted from the property in November 2015.
“We are presently looking for land to establish a new sanctuary, and things are moving fast,” Justin Fernandes told the www.mobserver.co.za on Wednesday.
The family was embroiled in a lengthy legal battle over the property, and ownership of their animals.
The courts however overturned the sale of the animals and returned them to the Fernandes family, who had conjured up massive support from the public.
Their animals were sold and bought by an anonymous North West game farmer, whose legal representative was met with staunch opposition from Jugomaro supporters on more than one occasion when trucks arrived to haul off the Jugomaro cats.
Supporters flocked to Jugomaro to form human chains to prevent the trucks from leaving.
The Fernandes family however challenged the sale by petitioning the High Court which ruled in their favour.
“We live in Johannesburg alongside our animals and will soon open a new sanctuary once appropriate land is found,” Justin said.
He sighed with relief upon hearing the news that Mbidi was up for auction.
“What a relief, any other place would be a much better environment for the Mbidi animals,” he said.
When pressed to explain his comment, Justin said “the way those people are treating the animals, their feeding regimes, the small enclosures, it is just downright scary”.
