An angel was murdered
A young man from Mhluzi was taken into custody and charged with murder after the body of his 17 year-old cousin was discovered in her parental home in Doornkop on Sunday morning.
Police were called out to Doornkop Phase 4 at around 08:30 where they discovered the body of the girl lying on the floor of a bedroom. She was partly covered with a blanket and her bedroom window was pried open.
The girl had a stab wound to the neck as well as strangulation marks.
The floor was covered with blood and a blue rope was found on the scene. It is suspected that the rope was used in the crime.
The girl’s parents were out of town, attending a funeral elsewhere during the incident. She was identified as 17 year-old Nokubonga Angel Khoza on Monday. A postmortem determined that the cause of death was strangulation.
Circumstances surrounding the murder, like the fact that the dogs did not bark on the fatal night, pointed to the possibility that Angel’s murderer might be someone known to the family.
On Sunday night, Vusi Skhosana (23) from Mhluzi, was taken in for questioning.
Capt. Khanyisile Zwane, Middelburg police spokesperson, confirmed that Skhosana was later formally charged and appeared in court on Tuesday, facing a charge of murder. He will remain in custody until his formal bail application next week.
It seems that Skhosana was visiting other relatives in Doornkop when the crime was committed.
During a memorial service, held at Mkhulu Combined School in Doornkop on Thursday, one of the murdered girl’s teachers said that she was a top five student who dreamed of becoming a doctor one day.
Angel was described as a top maths student, a devoted learner and a passionate girl with a bright future ahead of her. She was also part of her school’s representative student council.
Capt. Zwane said the school’s adopt-a-cop, const. Chico Mtsweni, supported Angel’s class mates and her family during the ordeal.
He as appealed with students to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to let justice take its course.
The docket is currently being investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit for further investigation.
Capt. Zwane said that it was tragic that a girl, who was supposed to be safe in her own bed, met such a cruel and untimely death.
The family did not want to comment on the incident.
