VIDEO – Eastdene learners injured in head-on crash between taxi and cement truck

A number of Eastdene Combined learners were injured when the taxi that was ferrying them to school, crashed head on with a cement truck in the Beyers Naude and Meyer Street crossing early Friday.

The driver of the taxi, which was trapped in his seat, was removed from the wreck by bystanders from the passenger door.

Crying children were comforted by spectators who rushed to the scene.

The crossing was blocked off for motorists when a number of ambulances arrived to treat the children for shock. A number of learners sustained lacerations from the broken windows of the taxi, which is completely written off.

The extent of the driver’s injuries is unclear.

Further chaos ensued due to a number of coal haulage trucks blocking the Stoffberg road into town, to wait for the scene to be cleared.
