Taxi driver saves octogenarians from hijack ordeal
A taxi driver rushed to the aid of two elderly women in Walter Sisulu Street last Thursday, which led to a gang of possible hijackers to flee the scene.
The two women, Ms Mienie Kruger (80), and her neighbour Ms Lida Roux (80), were travelling towards Hobson Street, when their car was suddenly boxed in by a Toyota Tazz and a unknown blue car.
Ms Ms Kruger says shortly before the incident, she struggled for some time to withdraw money from an ATM at Midwater Centre.
She believes that the men who attempted to rob and hijack them, had seen her at the ATM, and possibly thought that she withdrew a lot of money.
An oncoming taxi however knew the peril the two women were in, and immediately sped towards the Tazz.
He told the four occupants to leave the women alone and leave the scene.
On his second attempt, threatening to call the police, both the Tazz and the blue car, sped off.
“We’re so thankful to the taxi driver. I believe he saved our lives,” Ms Kruger told www.mobserver.co.za.
• Mr Stefan Victor was hijacked on January 6, at the Bethal N4 offramp. He was ordered to drive towards Stoffberg om gravle roads, before his car ran out of fuel. Mr Victor escaped into a nearby maize field, spurring his two hijackers to flee.
