This super power of a fruit is high in all the healthy fats and proteins – making it a perfect dish accompaniment and beauty essential.
No wonder it’s appeal has grown in recent years. The popularity of avos has skyrocketed and has become something of a trend all over the world.
South Africa is home to some of the world’s best avocados, and is one of the biggest exporters of the fruit according to the website of the South African Avocado Growers’ Association.
The Hass and Pinkerton are the two most popular types of avocados. However, it is currently out of season.
But with Summer nearing it’s end, avocado season is just about to begin. From mid-March to about September, avocados are grown mostly in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
This explains the high prices of these delicious fruit. At Woolworths and Spar, avocados will set you back R49.99 for two with Pick ‘n Pay charging R1 less at R48.99 for two avocados.
Fruit and Veg City charges R40 for two. Don’t let the prices put you off though, avocados are still extremely tasty and advantageous – they are worth every penny.
