VIDEO: Transvaal heading for Post Office Museum

A member of the ANC is up in arms with the "Transvaal" sign against the Middelburg Post Office wall.

Councillor Diphale Motshepe says that he is astonished that the word ‘Transvaal’ has managed to survive more than two decades of democracy.
Cathy Mkhuma, Regional Deputy Secretary for the ANC Youth League, says the word reminds her of an era that is best forgotten.
Before 1994 the provinces of Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga were collectively known as Transvaal.

The southeastern portion of Transvaal was briefly changed to Eastern Transvaal from 1994 to 1995 before it was named Mpumalanga, the place of the rising sun, as it is known today.

• Johan Kruger, spokesperson for SA Post Office, says that they have made arrangements for the immediate removal of the signage, with as less damage as possible to the mosaic artwork it is attached to.

The signage will be preserved and displayed in the Post Office Museum in Pretoria.
