UPDATE: ‘Whites’ warned to stay indoors by violent protesters, everything calm for now

Business owners and employees have barricaded themselves inside their premises to avoid contact with violent protesters.

White residents of Machadodorp have been warned by rampaging protesters to stay off the streets.

Highveld Emporium, owned by an Indian businessman, was torched by protesters. The fire is still raging.

Protests started after a racial incident between a black and white man.

It is unclear what had started the fight which saw the white man admitted to hospital with injuries.

All businesses in Potgieter Street remain on high alert for further protests and looting.

Latest information from someone on the scene is that there is currently a heavy police presence in the town and protesters have retreated.

Everyone remains on high alert.
