VIDEO: The Red Ants disassemble shacks – devastated Hlalamnandi residents witness the ruin of their homes

Families stood by in devastation as their homes were torn apart by the Red Ants.

The Hlalamnandi settlement, situated on the outskirts of Middelburg, is riddled with illegal shacks that provide living space for poor families.
Many of these homes are inhabited by three generations from the same family, all of whom now have nowhere else to go.

In a public meeting, residents had been forewarned to find themselves alternative accommodation, those who did not comply now sit without a roof over their heads.

On the border of Hlalamnandi, residents carried out their personal possessions and stacked them in the fields as they tried to salvage any remaining building materials.

The Red Ants is a private security company that specialises in the eviction of illegal residents. The men and women in their red overalls, tackled the shacks one by one and broke them down.

Several members of the Red Ants, as well as the police force, were assigned to crowd control as a measure of prevention against violent protests.
