Soccer team lucky to escape death after truck ferrying them home overturns
Three men were seriously injured when a truck transporting a soccer team rolled on the N11, Hendrina Road, around 17:00 on Sunday.
The truck was transporting the soccer team back from Pullenshope to Hendrina, where the team took part in a soccer tournament earlier according to W/O David Mbenekazi of the Hendrina SAPS.
A total of 22 men were on the back of the truck when it rolled, while the driver and two passengers were seated in the cab.
Only three of the 25 passengers on the truck sustained serious injury while the others were lucky to escape unharmed.
The driver of the truck was arrested on the scene for drunk driving.
He allegedly admitted to having four 750ml Black Label’s before he departed for home with the soccer team.
An open 750ml Black Label bottle was also found inside the cabin of the truck.
The driver is 32 years old and resides in the Driefontein area.
The driver is expected to appear in court early this week.
His identity is known to www.mobserver.co.za but cannot be released before he appeared on a charge of drunk driving.
