Help needed for homeless in Middelburg

Due to the national declaration of a 21 day lockdown, the homeless of Middelburg was taken off the streets and a tent camp was set up at at Kees Taljaard Stadium.

They are facing severe challenges.
The Community Policing Forum Chair, Ms Rehana Pilodia, pleaded with local residents for donations, to assist the more than 80 people, who are housed in tents on the rugby fields.
There is a need for the following goods: toilet paper, soap, sanitary pads for women, towels, blankets, food, masks, disposable cups, plates and cutlery and gas burners to prepare food.

Another challenge is dealing with the large number of drug addicts, alcoholics and smokers  in the group. Ms Pilodia said that medical assistance has been made available, but they need help to make sure the people do not escape from the grounds in search of drugs and alcohol.

She asked for security companies to assist with guards and for assistance to mend holes in the grounds fence.

She also asked NGO’s who can assist with food preparation to contact her.

Residents who want to donate goods, can send her a WhatsApp at 082 415 8029 to arrange for a contact-less pick up at their homes.

Collections will be done daily from 13:00 to 14:00.

•She thanked all her CPF members who are helping in this time, as well as the team from Twizza who are sponsoring all the drinking water for the homeless during the 21 days lockdown.
