Truck driver robbed on N4
A truck driver had to flee for his life after a gang of five men stormed his truck on the N4 near Middelburg.
According to information received from the police, the truck driver was leaving the Ultra City parking lot at around 20:30 on Tuesday 18 August.
As the truck was standing still at the slipway, waiting to join the N4, it was suddenly surrounded by five men. One of the men, armed with a handgun, used the weapon to knock on the driver’s window. The truck driver jumped out the passenger door and escaped into nearby bushes.
The driver managed to escape to the nearby weighbridge from where he called the police.
Capt. Khanyisile Zwane, Middelburg police spokesperson, said that when police arrived on the scene, they accompanied the driver back to the truck. It was discovered that the robbers made off with two cellphones and R570 cash.
No arrests have been made.
Capt. Zwane advised motorists to try and travel during the day and to avoid parking next to the N4 to urinate but to rather make use of designated rest stops.
