Komati community barricades roads, burns rubbish
Since sunrise today, the community of Komati Power Station has been blocking roads, burning rubbish and demanding an investigation into “nepotism”.

The community is accusing ANC Ward Councillor Nobesuthu Mkhuma of providing tenders to those closely affiliated with her, and sidelining the community.
The community demands inclusion in the erection of high mast lights in the ward.

They met with the Project Manager, demanding the hiring of local community members on the project on Saturday at a mass mobilization of community members.

The Project Manager failed to attend the community meeting, leading to today’s mass protests.
The community accuses Cllr Mkhuma of appointing a community liaison officer on the project, without consulting the community.
“We are increasingly being sidelined in municipal projects and employment opportunities, it must stop,” one of the protesters told www.mobserver.co.za.
The community said they will continue with protests until their demands are met.

Cllr Mkhuma told www.mobserver.co.za that she had nothing to do with the appointment of a contractor for the project, as the appointment was made after diligent tender processes.
She did however say that she merely “recommended” a local resident for the appointment of community liaison officer, “after consultation with the community at large”.
