Department reviewing MHS leadership selection, calls for calm
Threats of protests have been made following the announcement of the Hoërskool Middelburg leader group, consisting of all white learners.
According to a source, the same transparent, democratic, selection process, in which all the learners of the school are involved, has been followed. The same process has been followed for many years. There’s been a number of personal attacks on some of the leaders online, who are all still minors. “Protests will cause further disruptions to the school’s academic timeline, which has severely been compromised by Covid-19 and lockdown regulations already.” Some parents have responded to the fallout as “utter madness,” while others threatened to involve militant groups. The Department of Education has requested a full report from the school. Upon receipt of the report, the department will establish a course of action to be taken to ensure representation. The department has called for “calm” until the matter can be resolved at provincial level.
