Shootout ensues between SAPS and robbers

A hail of gunfire was unleashed on armed robbers after the Middelburg Flying Squad came upon a CIT heist in action on the R33 Belfast/Carolina this morning.

According to a media statement issued by the SAPS, the attempted CIT robbery, which took place at 08:30, was foiled by the Flying Squad, after they stumbled upon robbers using explosives to damage the armoured vehicle.

Following the shootout, the robbers had to abort their mission empty-handed, fleeing in two vehicles and abandoning one that had caught fire.

Three security guards were injured during the explosion, and were taken to hospital for treatment.

The SAPS is appealing to anyone with information, to contact 08600 10111.
