Man allegedly killed by a Mhluzi police officer

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has opened an investigation into a fatal shooting at the hands of a female Mhluzi police officer in Phumula.

The officer allegedly opened fire on two people, killing Sibusiso Buti Mndebele-Ntuli, and seriously injuring another.

According to IPID spokeswoman, Ms Ndileka Cola, Mhluzi police were dispatched to a tavern in the area due to an altercation between patrons.
The police did not respond to the call after learning that the fight had been resolved.

A second call was made to the police by the same tavern after another altercation broke out, to which the SAPS did respond.

Upon arrival the fight had, however, again been broken up, resulting in the responding officers going to the home to confront the victims.
An altercation ensued between the SAPS and the occupants of the house, resulting in two shots being fired.

Mr Mndebele-Ntuli was declared dead on the scene, while another male occupant of the house was rushed to hospital, where he is still being treated for a gunshot wound.

“IPID is continuing with the investigation and witness statements have already been taken, with post mortem results included in the docket. Exhibits have also been sent to the forensics laboratory for analysis,” Ms Cola added.

No arrests have been made yet.
