WATCH: Middelburg suffers blackout after Gholfsig substation explodes

The whole town was plunged into darkness after a very severe explosion at the Gholfsig substation.

Power was later restored to only certain parts of Middelburg, leaving areas like Gholfsig, Mhluzi and other suburbs connected to the substation without electricity.

A resident shares an image from nearby the substation.

It remains unclear what led to the explosion and it is expected that these areas will be without electricity for days.

*This explosion follows on a previous electrical fire that occurred at the same substation in December 2019, which left residents without electricity for four days.

Dennesig residents share images of how they could see the glow of the fire from afar.

Parts of Dennesig and Kanonkop were also without electricity earlier this week due to vandalism at the Dennesig substation.
