Second wave: ‘It is much worse this time’

Both hospitals in Middelburg have reported a sharp increase in Covid-19 numbers saying that the second wave of infections is definitely worse than the first.

Hennie Viljoen, Life Midmed manager, said that the hospital has two Covid wards that are filled to the brim and they are now in the process of opening a third one. The hospital’s Intensive Care Unit is also full.

“It is definitely much worse this time around,” Mr Viljoen said.

A doctor at the Middelburg Hospital said that they have five beds available in their Covid ward before it will also be full. They too have experienced a definite spike in Covid positive numbers and patients admitted to hospital. Critical patients are transferred to the Witbank Hospital in eMalahleni.

The Middelburg Hospital has an outside tent where Covid-19 tests are being done.

General Practitioners have also reported seeing more and more Covid positive patients and more requests for testing.
