A taxi war is brewing in Extension 24
There was a standoff in Extension 24 between the Middelburg District Taxi Association ( MDTA) and Nasaret District Taxi Association (NDTA) this morning.
Doctor Silinda of the Nasaret District Taxi Association (NDTA) told www.mobserver.co.za that the association is at wit’s end with MDTA taxis “illegally” operating on the Extension 24 and Rockdale routes.
Police officers and armed security personnel were on the scene.

Mr Silinda said the association has hired a security company from KwaZulu Natal to contain the situation.
According to Jerry Mthimunye of the MDTA, the armed security personnel were prohibiting their taxis from operating in Extension 24 and Rockdale.
Mr Mthimunye said the two associations are expected to have a meeting on Tuesday.
Mr Silinda said that the police and the municipality “are not doing anything” to prohibit MDTA from operating on their turf.
He also said NDTA has a court order against MDTA which they “completely disregard”.

• In 2015 NDTA took MDTA to the Pretoria High Court over disputed taxi routes.
Judge Segopotje Mphahlele ordered that the MDTA to refrain from intimidating, assaulting, harassing, injuring, threatening or otherwise interfering with any member, driver, employee or passenger of the Nasaret association.
The judgement stated that MDTA must restrain from transporting passengers of Nasaret, Hlalamnandi, Extension 24 and Rockdale to town and back.
