Is daar ’n skat iewers begrawe?

Is daar iewers op ons dorp ’n skatkis wat wag om ontdek te word?

Noudat Britte tydens die grendeltyd in hulle tuine rondgekrap het en daar afgekom is op onder andere Krugerrande in geroeste blikke, is daar weer gewonder of Middelburg nie ’n skat of twee het nie.

In die tagtigerjare het Jorrie Jordaan vertel dat hy as jong polisieman die betaalmeester van die Britse Magte wat op Middelburg gestasioneer was, moes vergesel.

Volgens sy vertelling was die Engelsman deel van die duisende Britse Magte troepe wat op die dorp gebly het tydens die Anglo-Boereoorlog. Hy het ’n groot hoeveelheid munte begrawe en toe die oorlog verby is dit net daar gelaat en teruggekeer na Londen.

Na jare het hy die vonds kom soek. Die dorp het intussen so uitgebrei dat hy heeltemal verward was en net kon onthou “dit was naby ’n kerk.”

Na dae se soektog het hy onverrigter sake teruggekeer na Engeland.

Mnr. Jordaan het later by Columbus se sekuriteitsafdeling gewerk en is intussen oorlede.

Daar is vele skatjagters op die dorp wat oor die jare op artifekte afgekom het op die dorp.

Langs die Klein Olifantsrivier is daar ’n plek waar honderde ou bottels al uitgegrawe is.

•Volgens die Britse Museum was daar die afgelope jaar meer as 81 000 argeologiese vondste – ’n toename van 10 000 teenoor die vorige jaar.
