NDTA ‘forcefully opens’ taxi rank

After nearly three years of waiting for the Nasaret Taxi Rank to open its doors to the Nasaret District Taxi Association (NDTA), more delays occurred on Monday.

The municipality sent out an invitation for the handover of the taxi rank last week.

On Monday, the grand opening was abruptly cancelled due to ‘rival taxi’ disputes, which caused members of the NDTA to forcefully open the taxi rank themselves.

Earlier this year, a decision was taken to hand over the taxi rank, however, the handover was postponed for the umpteen time.

In June, Chief Japie Willemse of the NDTA said the municipality had already started billing the association for the unused taxi rank.

For months, taxi officials and their passengers had to use the toilets at the Shoprite centre and sometimes the restrooms were closed, causing people to illegally urinate in the open parking area.

The R15-million development was completed last year, and 28 hawkers are expected to occupy the stalls.

The locked ablution facilities comprise of two bathrooms and a handicapped bathroom.

The taxi rank also has office space, a boardroom and a kitchen.
