Hospital guards deny patients entry

Security guards block hospital entrance.

Motorists are urged to steer clear of Hospital Street due to Middelburg Provincial Hospital security guards downing tools and picketing.

This morning, patients were prohibited from entering the hospital gate by the guards, and nurses had to break a lock to enable patients to enter.

The protest was prompted by a string of complaints raised by the guards.

Last year several guards were shot at during a protest about salary disputes. Five people were arrested shortly after the shooting.
