84 fines issued during Easter Traffic Campaign

The Steve Tshwete Traffic Department launched its Easter Traffic Campaign last Friday at the Stoffberg weighbridge and in Hendrina.

With thousands of motorists using the N4, N11 and roads in Middelburg, the campaign focuses on the use of safety belts, the roadworthiness of vehicles, fatigue, drunk driving, pedestrian safety and dangerous driving, which includes speeding, recklessness and overtaking on barrier lines.

The municipality said it slapped motorists with 84 fines for different offences.

Seven hawkers were fined for operating without permits, two motorists were arrested for drunk driving, one vehicle was confiscated and 10 warrants of arrest were issued.

“Together, we can do more to save lives on our roads, as each motorist must play their part in ensuring that all those who share the road space should Arrive Alive,” said the MMC for Public Safety, Councillor Bathobile Shabangu.
