Peaceful protesters hand over memorandum
A meeting between 250 residents and Steve Tshwete Local Municipality employees occurred just outside the municipal grounds on Thursday, April 13.
The purpose of the meeting was to hand over a memorandum, mainly focusing on the issue of unemployment, among other issues plighting the community, such as proper drug rehabilitation facilities and the issue of load-shedding.
The peaceful picket was organised and efficient, allowing several members of the community to step forward and either ask questions or give statements to the municipal employees.
The MMC for Spatial Development and Human Settlement, Mr Mthikozisi Gift Maseko, was present and signed the memorandum.
There was no political party behind the demonstration, with residents highlighting universal issues that affect all members of the community.
The event was coordinated primarily by former councillor Bheki Marumo.
Mr S. A. Mahlangu of the Nkangala District Municipality also attended the picket and signed documents.
The municipality has been given seven days to respond to the issues featured in the memorandum.
