According to Mr Muhammad Kasu, his wife, Aasiya, was on her way home from work late Thursday afternoon when the driver crashed into her at the Meyer Street- and Dr Beyers Naudé intersection while she was waiting at the traffic light.

“The man was leaving the OK Grocer shopping complex when he crashed into my wife’s vehicle before reversing and driving off.”

Aasiya observed that there were two young children in the car with him, who were both crying. Neither of them were wearing a seatbelt, and her concern for their safety resulted in her and another motorist taking after the reckless driver.

Mr Kasu explained that multiple attempts to stop the man were unsuccessful, and Aasiya followed him all the way to the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court, where he then crashed into a small truck on Walter Sisulu Street.

After his second crash, which he allegedly fled from as well, Aasiya gave up her chase.

While the Kasus were in the process of opening an accident report for insurance purposes, they were informed by the insurer that the same driver had also crashed into a trailer on the same day.

The man’s wild ride finally came to an end with a fourth accident, after he allegedly crashed into a sign at a filling station on Cowen Ntuli Street.

“His fourth crash was the final blow and his car could no longer drive, which resulted in him being towed away.”

Mr Kasu said that the towing services who hauled the Opel away informed him that by then the children were no longer with him in the vehicle.

With Aasiya, fortunately, escaping any serious injury, the couple opted to open an accident report at the SAPS, but no charges were laid against the driver.

“We decided to leave the matter in the hands of the police and our insurer.”
