Council Speaker’s blue light vehicle involved in accident

Council Speaker Thomas Mpye was involved in an accident this morning that left his vehicle flipped on its side.

No injuries were sustained during the accident.

The accident occurred on the four-way intersection of Dr Mandela Drive and the N11 Hendrina road near Columbus Stainless.

The official vehicle, which sustained massive damage, and one other vehicle, were involved. Several children were travelling in the other vehicle.

The roads are partially open, with a traffic officer at the scene directing congested traffic, but residents are urged to use other routes.

The speaker has previously been accused of “abusing his official vehicle”, and the matter is under investigation by the public protector’s office and the council’s ethics committee.

He narrowly survived a motion of no confidence during a recent special council sitting.
