Protests last throughout the night at Witkerk
Residents situated close to the Middelburg Court were kept up throughout the night by the singing of protesters who have blocked off a section of OR Tambo Street where tents and portable toilets were erected.
The protesters blocked off the section between Dr Beyers Naudé Drive and Joubert Street and police were monitoring the scene which remained peaceful.
According to a message that was shared to parents of Mini Explorers Preschool, which is located at the Witkerk, the protesters identified themselves as the Sret Organisation.
They assured that their protests will remain a peaceful stance of defiance against the High Courts, alleging that the High Courts and government are behind the thefts of disability grants, pension funds and child grants.
The Sret Organisation explained that the group of protesters consists of elderly and people living with disability.
Members if the SAPS were at the scene after instruction from the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality to clear up the protesters.
According to residents in the vicinity, shots were fired, which is suspected to be rubber bullets fired by the police. The scene has been cleared and the protesters removed.
